Hero Dog Breaks Out Of Home And Saves Family From Gas Leak
February 12, 2019
An 11-year-old pit bull named Sadie is being hailed as a hero for saving her family from a gas leak in their Tuckahoe, New York, home.
The Tuckahoe Police Department received a call about a barking dog on the loose. When police arrived, Sadie guided the officers back to her home.
"The dog then ran and took the officers through several streets, and then lead them back to the dog's residence into the backyard," police Lieutenant Lawrence Rotta said.
The officers noticed the home's sliding glass door was open, and the fence was broken. As police walked the perimeter of the house, they smelled gas coming from an open basement window.
The Eastchester Fire Department responded to the scene and confirmed there was a gas leak coming from the basement.
Further inspection revealed claw marks and blood on the back of the door, leading the family to believe Sadie sensed there was danger and jumped into action.
Somehow, Sadie chewed and dug out the wooden blocker keeping the sliding door shut and managed to run out into the backyard.
"She is a hero," owner Serena Costello said. "She is our hero. It's just so out of character for her to do. She saved our lives."
