Eric Church Fights Back Tears, Sings Tribute To Las Vegas Shooting Victims
October 6, 2017
Eric Church played a show in Las Vegas just 48 hours before the mass shooting took place. He stood on the same stage watching thousands of his fans smile and cheer.
On October 4, Church was scheduled to perform at the Grand Ole Opry. He didn't want to do it.
"I didn't want to be here tonight," he addressed the crowd. "I didn't want to play guitar, and I didn't want to walk on this stage."
But the night before, he received a video of a Tennessee woman talking to Anderson Cooper on CNN wearing an Eric Church shirt. Her husband Sunny died in the shooting, shielding her from the bullets.
In the video, she tells Anderson she was only in Las Vegas because Sunny wanted to see Church perform, and that they also had tickets to Church's show at the Grand Ole Opry.
She changed Church's decision to cancel, and inspired him to write a new song called "Why Not Me", dedicated to Sunny and all the other innocent people who lost their lives that day.
