"It's been a tough year, full of grief and sadness for many, many, many people," he said. "But 45 years ago today I had a wake-up call. I was heading for disaster. I was drinking myself to death. I'm not preachy but, I got a message, a little thought, that said, ‘Do you want to live or die?' and I said I wanted to live. And suddenly the relief came and my life has been amazing."
In 2018, Hopkins spoke to about 500 students at the University Of California and discussed his problems with alcohol and the impact it had on his early career.
The actor told how he started to change following the talk with a woman at Alcoholics Anonymous, who asked him "why don't you just trust in God?".
From then on the urge to drink was "never to return", he added.
