A lesson in unconditional love
May 17, 2012
An abandoned new-born squirrel was found in the backyard of Debbie Cantlon's home a few weeks ago. She decided to take it in and help raise it until it could go off on his own. She named him Glen.
Debbie bottle fed the infant squirrel every day. Glen took well to the nursing and the bond began. But that was only the beginning.
Debbie has a Papillion, Mademoiselle Giselle, who was pregnant at the time Glen was brought into the house. Glen was resting in a nest in a cage just days before Giselle was due to deliver her puppies. Cantlon and her husband watched as the dog dragged the squirrel's cage twice to her own bedside before she gave birth. This is where the magic begins...
At first Giselle seemed a little nervous, or cautious, about having Glen around her new-born puppies, but decided to let them bond.
Glen immediately fit right in. He was burrowing underneath his new puppy brothers, sleeping and taking long naps in the massive dog pile.
Giselle took Glen in as if one of her own and introduced him to her family. She cared for him and enjoyed the bond that was created between dog and squirrell. It didn't matter that Glen was different, she took him in to care for him because he was in need of a mother.
I hope that we can all learn something about this story. It doesn't matter what our differences are. Don't give up the opportunity to love. This precious story is only one of the many lessons we learn about love, and life. Always choose to love, and when you do, love unconditionally.
