Greg Spike said he was on his morning jog when he noticed smoke ahead of his running trail along the Willamette River in Eugene, Oregon.
The grandfather of 16 filmed the blaze on his phone as he jogged when he suddenly heard a woman cry for help.
It was Illinois native Stacy Barkley who was staying at the hotel while visiting family.
"When I opened the door, the hallway was filled with smoke," she said. She walked to the balcony and she saw flames racing from the adjacent room. She began to panic.
That's when she saw Spike on the walking path.
Spike ran toward the building and encouraged Barkley to jump.
"I said, 'Come on, hit me, hit me'," Spike said. "I was trying to tell her I would break her fall."
"He just said 'jump,' so I did, and he was there to save me," Barkley said.
After the rescue, Spike consoled the frightened woman.
"Thank you!" Barkley told her rescuer as the two hugged. "Oh my God, you saved me."
After making the save, Spike continued on his jog.
