Mike Hughes, 61, was a captain with the Wenatchee, Wash., Fire Department 17 years ago when he responded to an emergency call about a house fire.
Firefighters had no idea when they arrived on scene if anyone was in the house. Hughes had a hunch, and found the 9-month-old girl trapped in her crib, overwhelmed by smoke inhalation. It was the first roomed he checked.
"The room was full of hot smoke," Hughes told Komo News. "Another 20 seconds and it would have been a different outcome."

The rescue stuck in Hughes' mind so much that a few years ago he went online to check on Dawnielle Davison. He found her on Facebook, and they've stayed in touch ever since.

Dawnielle reached out to Hughes and invited him to her high school graduation.
"She said words to the effect of, 'I wouldn't be here if it weren't for you and your crew,'" Hughes said. "It meant an awful lot to me. I was really happy."
