Library Angels

I have a son who is on the autism spectrum. He is partly non verbal and gets hyper focused on certain things. His current obsession is ice age dvds.

We recently had some appointments for a school assessment at a local library, I have not tried to take him to the library for quite a while since he was not able to stay very quiet last time we went. At the assessment he did great for about 7 mins then was distracted by the dvd section. We started to go regularly as a reward for his therapy. He has up to 8 appointments a week and it can be quite taxing. Renting a movie from the local library has been a nice reward.

Recently we discovered a store downstairs in our downtown library. It only had a few shelves dedicated to dvds. There is a large office nearby that houses the back stock of dvds waiting for shelf space. I mentioned to one of the library volunteers that my son loves looking through the window of the office to see if he can find his favorite movie "Ice Age".

After making a purchase of 5 dvds she told me she would be glad to take my son Ryder in the office to see if he could find the movie he had his heart set on. He was ecstatic. She showed him the kids dvd section and he was able to find “Ice Age” along with many other favorites.

The nice women who’s name is Galey told us to come back on Sundays and she would be glad to let us look in the back stock. She made my sons day, she truly understood his needs to look through everything , she didn’t judge us and really appreciated having my son along with my toddler in her office.

When we went to check out the new treasures we found, another volunteer told Ryder she would be happy to pay for 2 of his movies! He was so happy. It was a totally amazing gesture. She was happy to see him so happy and it truly made my day.

Being a special needs parent has many ups and downs but it truly is amazing to see how many people care about my son and want him to have a good experience. These ladies are like angels the angels in the library!
