The long-haired tabby, known by locals as Masha, became a neighborhood legend after rescuing an abandoned baby during the freezing winter in the city of Obninsk.
Residents of the building had begun hearing loud, persistent meowing echoing through the hallway. The sound wouldn’t stop, and it eventually caught the attention of a neighbor named Irina Lavrova.
“She is very placid and friendly, so when I heard her meowing, I thought that perhaps she had injured herself,” Lavrova said. “Normally she would have come and said hello to me.”
Concerned, she went to investigate.
At the end of the corridor, she discovered a cardboard box. Inside was something she never expected to see—a newborn baby boy.

Curled protectively around him was Masha.
The cat had climbed into the box and wrapped her body around the infant, helping keep him warm as temperatures outside dropped below freezing. Her constant meowing had been an urgent call for help.
“You can imagine my shock when I saw her lying in a box next to a baby,” Lavrova said.
Masha is a communal cat who is cared for by several residents in the building. When she discovered the infant, her motherly instincts appeared to kick in immediately.
“Clearly her mothering instincts had taken over and she wanted to protect the child,” Lavrova explained.
Thankfully, the baby had only been outside for a short time. He was dressed warmly in a hat and clothes, and whoever left him had placed a few nappies and some baby food in the box.
Paramedics soon arrived and rushed the newborn to the hospital for a checkup. Doctors reported that he was in good health and had not been harmed by the cold.
“The baby had only been outside for a few hours and thanks to Masha … he was not damaged by the experience,” a hospital spokesman said.
Emergency responders later praised the feline hero, noting that her warmth and persistence likely helped the baby survive the freezing temperatures.
Back at the apartment building, Masha quickly became the pride of the neighborhood.
“Everyone in the block is very proud of her,” Lavrova said. “We have all spoiled her rotten by giving her her favorite food.”
