Kindness At The Grocery Store

By Jen • July 1, 2022

I’ve been wanting to share some kindness for a long time and I had my opportunity the other afternoon at the grocery store.

A lady in front of me had $55 for her groceries. She had a 3L milk and bread left and was hoping they would total the $5. I knew they wouldn’t as the bread alone was $3.70. When it scanned to almost $60 the lady was going to leave her bread behind.

I asked the cashier to please add it to my groceries. The lady insisted I didn’t have too and I insisted it would be my pleasure.

She also had 2 bags of treats (chocolate and something else). The cashier looked at me and with smiling eyes (as she knew what my answer would be) asked “these as well”. The lovely lady was like “oh no” I said “yes please those too, enjoy them with a cuppa tonight”. She insisted she would after her grandkids were in bed.

I realised then how important my kindness was. That loaf of bread may have meant the difference between her grandkids getting a sandwich or not. I hope I’m never in a position to decide whether to choose milk or bread for my kids and if I am that a thoughtful stranger helps me out. The cost of living is affecting us all but I’m so glad I was in a position to help this lovely lady.

It’s been something I’ve wanted to do for a long time
