Netflix Is Saving Kids From Over 150 Hours Of Commercials A Year
September 1, 2016
The number of commercials in the typical hour of television has grown steadily during the last five years, according to a new study from the ratings measurement firm Nielsen.
In fact, shows are being sped up ever-so-slightly just to shove an extra ad or two in there.
Exstreamist did some research this week, and discovered that in recent years, as parents turn to streaming services like Netflix to keep their kids entertained, that the average child is now spared from over 150 hours of commercials a year.
The math breakdown:
The average kid spends 1.8 hours a day using a streaming service like Netflix or Amazon Prime. That's about 650 hours of streaming consumption per year. With the average hour of television usually housing over 14 minutes of commercials, it's quick to see how many ads our children are spared from on a yearly basis.
That's over six days a year being bombarded with ads for sugary cereal, rot-your-teeth soda, over-hyped toys and more. Think about how much money this saves you as a parent as well!
It will be interesting to see if in the future as this younger generation starts shopping themselves, if buying habits are different from current trends.
As someone who spent much of my childhood watching commercials, I still have hundreds of jingles and taglines rattling around my brain that I wish I could forget.
