Engineering Student Designs A 'Mobile Airbag' That Deploys When You Drop Your Phone
June 28, 2018
The German Society for Mechatronics recently awarded outstanding work in the field of mechatronics. All over Germany, universities were invited to submit their best bachelor theses.
The first place prize went to 25-year-old engineering student Philip Frenzel for his clever idea to develop a mobile phone airbag.

Frenzel said he did not want to compromising the phone's aesthetic with an ugly protective shell, so why not something that only deploys when the phone is in danger?
He created a mechanism with sensors that detect when the phone is in free fall and activate before it hits a surface.
The "metal curls" lie flat inside the case. But when released, they pop out, protecting the the phone from impact and softening the blow.
The project is to be financed by crowdfunding on Kickstarter in July.
