Rick Mueller and Joe Martinez served together in 1971 aboard the U.S.S. White Plains.
Mueller tried to reach out to Martinez in 1976 at a Denver gas station, calling numbers in the phone book, but was unsuccessful. Then, recently, Mueller received a letter from Martinez, which said, "I have been trying to reach you. You were my best friend."
