A tornado warning may have interrupted their wedding celebration, but it ended up creating a moment this couple — and hundreds of strangers — will never forget.

Visha and Ankeet Shah were in the middle of one of the most meaningful events of their wedding weekend at the Oklahoma City Convention Center when the unexpected happened. The couple was celebrating their traditional Garba dance, something Visha had been especially excited about, when the music suddenly stopped and sirens filled the room.

“I remember them saying, ‘We have an emergency! There’s a tornado watch happening and we need to take shelter and go downstairs,’” Ankeet recalled.

What followed could have been chaos—but instead became something remarkable.

With nearly 400 guests in attendance, the wedding planner and venue staff quickly sprang into action, safely moving everyone downstairs in about 10 to 15 minutes. As the group settled into shelter, they realized they weren’t alone. A volleyball tournament was happening in the building at the same time, and teams had also been directed to shelter in place.

That’s when the mood began to shift.

“We started kind of chatting with one of the coaches, and before we knew it, the girls ran onto the court taking pics with the couple and started chanting and lifting them up,” said wedding planner Sydney Ore.

Members of the OKC Heat 15 National Volleyball Team didn’t just watch from the sidelines, they jumped right into the celebration.

“The girls were basically singing with us, dancing with us. They made us feel like royalty,” Ankeet said.

“We joined into the party,” added player Kinley Anderson.

What could have been a stressful, even frightening interruption turned into an unforgettable display of kindness and connection. The team even helped recreate the Garba—this time without music.

“There’s usually music playing and people singing along,” Visha said. “But we did a silent dance… and we looked over and saw the volleyball girls across the net doing it with us. That was super fun and memorable.”

For Visha, the emotions of the night quickly transformed.

“I was crying a little bit, but it was no longer sad tears,” she said. “It was these joyful tears of complete strangers encouraging me — and encouraging us.”

In a moment where fear could have taken over, a group of strangers chose joy instead. And in doing so, they gave this couple a wedding memory far more powerful than anything they had planned.

As Visha put it best: “When things look rough and scary, we can come together and make it joyful.”
