A Baby Pygmy Hippo Was Just Born at Toronto Zoo!

A tiny new arrival is giving the Toronto Zoo a very big reason to celebrate!

The zoo has announced the birth of a female endangered pygmy hippo calf, born Sunday morning, August 2, to 20-year-old mom Kindia.

Zoo staff first noticed that Kindia had gone into labor around 8:15 a.m. A few hours later, tiny feet appeared, and after about 1.5 hours of active labor, one final push brought the healthy calf into the world.

And this little girl wasted no time getting to know her new surroundings.

She began trying to stand just 15 minutes after birth and was confidently moving around within a few hours. About 4.5 hours after being born, she was already nursing.

Mom and baby are both doing well and are spending some special bonding time together behind the scenes in their Little Hippo Hollow, where Zoo professionals are keeping a close eye on them around the clock.

Kindia has now become a mother for the third time, and the Toronto Zoo says she has proven to be an attentive mom, carefully protecting her newborn beneath her.

The calf's father is 31-year-old Harvey. The two pygmy hippos were introduced for just eight days in January, which resulted in this little bundle of joy.

For now, the baby hippo isn't available for guests or members to see as she continues bonding with Mom.

And while this is certainly a celebration, it's also an important moment for conservation.

Pygmy hippos are endangered, with an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 remaining in the wild. Native to the forests and swamps of West Africa, they face growing threats from habitat loss, logging, mining, agriculture, human settlement and hunting.

The Toronto Zoo says the birth represents hope for the species and highlights the important role accredited zoos play in conservation efforts.

For now, though, there's just a tiny new hippo getting stronger, a proud mama keeping her close, and an entire Zoo team making sure they're both doing well.
