An 86-year-old Pennsylvania farmer is going viral — not for selling his land, but for refusing to.

Mervin Raudabaugh, a dairy farmer in Cumberland County, says he has owned his 261 acres for more than 60 years. He spent 51 of those years as a dairy farmer, building not just a livelihood, but a legacy.

Recently, he says he was offered $15 million from a data center developer who wanted to buy the property.

He turned it down.

In a video that has now captured hearts online, Raudabaugh explained why:

“I realized that most people in the United States still care about farmers,” he said. “And we are still an important cog in our food supply here.”

For him, the issue goes beyond one large check. He worries about what happens when farmland disappears — replaced by development and warehouses that, once built, are unlikely to ever return to agriculture.

“There’s only a few farms left in this area and I think they should quit building on farm land,” he said.

Raudabaugh believes maintaining a farm economy that can support families is essential — not just for rural communities, but for the country as a whole. He also says respecting farmers helps ensure our food system doesn’t become entirely dependent on processed options.

The response online has been overwhelmingly supportive.

One viewer wrote, “What he is saying is ‘My integrity is not for sale.’ His piece of paradise will remain his legacy, not an ugly, noisy data center that is not aligned with his values or the way he wants to be remembered. Bravo to you Sir!”

Another added, “Thank you sir, for caring more about the land and other farmers than money. THANK YOU!”

And perhaps the most heartfelt comment simply said: “I just want to give him a hug. He’s so kind and so right. What a good caring guy.”
