A Rare Wonder: Giant Pod Of 1,500 Dolphins Spotted Off California Coast
January 29, 2025
Marine biologists and whale watchers were treated to a once-in-a-lifetime experience when they encountered a "super pod" of over 1,500 Risso’s dolphins off the coast of Carmel Bay, California.
This awe-inspiring sighting was a remarkable deviation from the species' usual behavior, as Risso’s dolphins typically travel in smaller pods of just 10 to 30 individuals.

Monterey Bay Whale Watch
The unexpected event unfolded during a routine trip by Monterey Bay Whale Watch, originally planned to track migrating Gray whales. Researchers and passengers aboard were stunned as the ocean came alive with hundreds of dolphins leaping, swimming, and playing around their boat.
"It was amazing," said Captain Evan Brodsky of Monterey Bay Whale Watch.
The sight of a super pod—essentially a large, temporary gathering of dolphins—is incredibly rare and often leaves scientists marveling at the unknown intricacies of marine animal behavior. Experts believe such massive congregations may occur during socializing events or when feeding opportunities are abundant.
The Risso’s dolphins, with their distinctive white scars and blunt heads, created an unforgettable scene as they surfed waves and swam in perfect harmony.
"It was a really memorable encounter that I won’t forget for a long time," Brodsky said.
