In a joyful social media announcement, the zoo shared updates on the new koala joeys: “We’re thrilled to announce the arrival of not one, not two, but three koala joeys this spring as part of our breeding program. Two of the joeys are already making regular appearances outside their mum’s pouches!”

@tarongazoo Welcome to the world littles ones 🍃🐨✨ We’re thrilled to announce the arrival of not one, not two, but three koala joeys this spring as part of our breeding program. Two of the joeys are already making regular appearances outside their mum’s pouches! The proud mums are first-timers Luna and Stormi, along with experienced mum Willow. Want to help us name Luna’s adventurous little joey? Stay tuned—our naming competition launches this Friday in partnership with @Visa 🎉 #ForTheWild ♬ I Think I Like When It Rains - WILLIS

First-time koala mums Luna and Stormi are adjusting beautifully to motherhood, while experienced mum Willow has added another little one to her family.

The excitement doesn’t stop there. Taronga Zoo also announced the hatching of two Short-beaked echidna puggles in their behind-the-scenes breeding program. The two puggles, now 101 and 92 days old, are the 9th and 10th to be born at the zoo since the program began in 2011.

Echidnas, as monotremes, are an exceptional challenge to breed. Known for laying eggs and having specialised mammary glands rather than teats, these unique creatures require months of careful planning and care. The zoo’s team has dedicated significant effort to creating the ideal conditions for the puggles’ arrival, and their success is a testament to their expertise.

“We’re quill-vering with excitement to share this news,” the zoo posted.

These births represent a vital step forward in conservation efforts, helping to secure the future of these species. Visitors can look forward to catching glimpses of the koala joeys as they venture out of their pouches, while the puggles will remain in private care until they grow strong enough to meet the public.

With these new additions, the Taronga Zoo continues to play a critical role in preserving and protecting Australia’s native wildlife—while also giving everyone a reason to smile.
