"When I was little, I used to see a lot of people struggling," Cartier Carey said. Motivated by the struggles of some of his friends' families, he chose to help single parents, according to his mom Britany Stewart-Carey.
So, this summer Cartier started selling lemonade and snacks to his neighbors for a few hours every day.
At the end of each day, he uses the earnings to buy diapers and baby wipes.
It didn't take long for Cartier's mission, which he named "Kids 4 Change," to generate a following.
An online GoFundMe fundraiser has generated more than $19,000 of donations.
"You guys are amazing!!! We have reached our 10,000 goal!!!" Stewart-Carey wrote on GoFundMe. "Your donations are continuing to help us put diapers and wipes in households that can not afford them. We have started to ship diapers to different states and are planning to deliver more diapers. We are also working to help more families outside of Virginia. We are hoping to get a work van so that we can safely transport all of the diapers and wipes."
One woman, who came by to donate $200, became emotional when she met Cartier, explaining how she used to be homeless and relied on the donations of strangers to provide for her children.
"You are helping so many people, you don't even know," she said.
