Aubrey Fontenot said his son Jordan, 8, had been complaining about a bully at school.
"I talked to school several times and told them about the kid but u know that never gets far," Fontenot wrote on Instragam.
But it kept happening. And things came to a head when the bully stole Jordan's phone.
Fontenot went to the school and spoke to the principal and a cop. And though they didn't come right out and say it, Fontenot got the feeling this kid needed help.
Fontenot discovered that his son's bully was actually being bullied by other children at school because he didn't have clean clothes or shoes. When Fontenot spoke with the boy's mother, who gave him permission to reach out to her son, she told him the family was homeless and struggling to find stability.
So, Fontenot spent the day with his son's bully.
"I decided to spend some time with my sons school bully yesterday .. just to dig a little deeper on 'why?' .. come to find out he was being bullied for not having clean clothes n clean shoes.. .. once again I asked 'why?' .. just to find out that his family had fell on hard times .. it started to make perfect sense .. we have no clue what these children are going thru these days because a lot of us just don't care .. and this is not a uncommon story for a lot of people .. so I spent a lot of my day yesterday by shopping and teaching this young man about self respect. Integrity. Morals. Confidence. And other things that consist of going from a troubled youth to a great man.. we all come from different backgrounds but we all share the same goal of success," Fontenot wrote on Instagram.
Fontenot also set up a meeting between the boy and Jordan.
"They each got to talk and then I said, 'From here, this is nothing. Shake hands and from now on you are brothers and you protect each other'."
The boys are now friends and play video games together in Fontenot's tattoo parlor.
Fontenot also launched a GoFundMe for the boy's family, which exceeded its $7,000 goal to raise more than $32,000.
