George Corones, who turns 100 in April, finished the race in 56.12 seconds at an official event in Queensland, a new benchmark for the 100-104 age category.

He crushed the previous record by 35 seconds.

"We have just witnessed history in the making!" the Australian Dolphins swim team wrote on its Facebook page.

Remarkably, after six decades out of the pool, Corones only dived into swimming again on his 80th birthday.

"It just came naturally at 80 and I've been doing it for 20 years now," he told 9 News.
