I Will Remember This For The Rest Of My Life And I Tell Everyone I Can
By a friend • April 16, 2026
This happened last year in December. I was on my way home, flying, and I had to change terminals, I think I was in Houston. To change terminals I had to get on one of those trains that take people from terminal to terminal, I think they call it the Skyway in Houston.
When I got on the train it was pretty full. I had to stand, with nothing to hold on to. I am a 64 year old black woman (you'll understand why I mentioned this in a minute). I also have back issues.
The trains in Houston are not as smooth as the ones in Atlanta and when that train moved, it jerked and the ride was not smooth. I was struggling to not move, but with every jerk of that train I and my carry-on suitcase were getting pushed around. I was trying so hard to not move, but it was impossible. I thought I was going to fall.
I looked slightly behind me to make sure I wasn't going to bump into anyone with the next jerky movement.
Right then, a young man, maybe late 20s, early 30s put out his elbow, looked at me, then looked down at his arm. He was holding his elbow out like how it's done when someone is going to escort you. When I tell you, my heart filled with so much joy, I cannot describe how awesome that kind, kind, noble and caring gesture was, or even properly describe just how much it meant to me. I'm about to cry typing this.
I thanked him profusely. He held on to me and I on to him until a seat was avaliable for me to sit down. He actually got off at the next stop and I thanked him again. He said you are welcome. I don't think he spoke much English because he had an accent that was maybe Dutch, Finnish, I really don't know.
That young man didn't care that I was black, he offered me kindness human being to human being genuine kindness.
With all the hate and ugliness going on in the US, I needed something to give me hope and allow me to believe that there is still goodness and kindness and humanity in this world. That sweet, sweet, man gave that to me and more. I came home and put a post-it note on my mirror that says "There is kindness in this world." I don't know his name, but I pray for him all the time, definitely when I see that note. I send those prayers out into the universe and I ask God to take care of, bless, and protect that young man.
Whomever you are, thank you again. Thank you for restoring my faith. I hope you feel every prayer and all the well wishes I send your way.
I will remember this for the rest of my life and I tell everyone I can this story. Reliving it keeps my heart 10 sizes too big!
