A woman who collects trash five nights a week with her loyal dog, Princess, was surprised by a resident who gifted her dog a matching safety vest - and the heartfelt moment quickly turned into something even bigger.

After the video went viral, people learned more about the hardworking woman’s difficult circumstances, inspiring a fundraiser to help her get back on her feet.

Residents at the apartment community were already familiar with the pair. Night after night, the trash collector made her rounds, Princess faithfully walking beside her. Rain or shine, she showed up, doing a job that isn’t easy but is essential.

One resident, Olivia Perkins, was especially touched by their routine and the bond between the woman and her dog. She began filming short clips of the two working together, and eventually decided to surprise her with a thoughtful gift: a matching safety vest for Princess so they could work together safely—and in style.

In the video, the woman gently puts the vest on her dog, smiling as she thanks Perkins, clearly moved by the gesture. What might have seemed like a small act of kindness meant a great deal.

As the video spread online, viewers were touched not only by the sweet moment but by the woman’s attitude and work ethic.

Her daughter-in-law even spotted the video and commented:

“That’s my mother in law!! She was so excited about the matching vest & her dog princess she loves it too always enjoys going to work with her every night 🫶 thank you”

Soon after, the woman herself joined the conversation, overwhelmed by the kindness she was receiving:

“That’s mee!! Thank you everyone for all the love 🥺 I’ve been crying reading all these kind comments. My job is not easy but I still show up every day & princess she loves to tag along.”

As people learned more about her story, the moment became even more meaningful.

Perkins later shared that the trash collector has been going through a divorce and recently had to sell her Jeep to buy a truck in order to keep her job. She and Princess are now living with her son in a one-bedroom apartment, working hard just to get by.

Despite everything, Perkins said, she continues to show up every day with a smile and a kind word for everyone she meets.

Wanting to help, Perkins started a GoFundMe to support her.

“My valet trash lady and now my friend has been a constant, friendly presence in my apartment community,” she wrote. “Rain or shine, she always has her loyal dog by her side, and their bond is something special.”

So far, the fundraiser has raised more than $8,000.

It’s a reminder that kindness often starts with the simplest gestures… and sometimes, those gestures can change someone’s life.
