"This is what happens when you run away from home," the department wrote in their post. "This guy was captured sneaking through yards on the 1300 block on New Jersey Avenue. #pugmug"
People from all over the country have shared the hilarious photo and left comments.
"How cute is this? Kudos Cape May Police Dept Police for finding this little guy. I hope the owner was found. In addition, Kudos to you guys for having fun with this," Christopher Munoz wrote in a comment.
"Thank you from Baltimore, MD for taking such good care of one of our four legged runaways. I hope his time in the slammer has set him straight and put him back on the road to a crime free life," Lily Lottes wrote.
Cape May Police chief Anthony Marino said the dog has been reunited with his owner, thanks to the power of social media.
"We use social media a lot. It's a great way to reach a lot of people. You can reach a ton of people. It's a great way for us to get investigative leads," Marino told The Dodo. "And sure enough, someone who saw the Facebook post knew the dog's owner and got in touch with them. We were able to reunite the dog and her owner. Everyone found it funny, but it ended up finding the owner for us."
