"We take for granted having a bed to go home to at night after a long day of work or school and the comfort that brings us," said Addie Roberts with Teens Give Back SATX.
With this in mind, Roberts and her peers decided to repurpose used grocery bags into something invaluable for San Antonio’s unsheltered residents.
The process of creating these sleeping mats involves patience, dedication, and a collective effort. Each mat requires weaving approximately 700 to 900 plastic bags. It can take 15-20 hours to complete.

Despite the labor-intensive nature of their project, the teenagers remain steadfast in their commitment to making a positive impact on their community.
"In some temperatures, the mats can save lives by keeping people off the ground," said Rex Brien, Vice President of Emergency Services for SAMMinistries.
Indeed, the simple act of providing a barrier between individuals and the elements can make a world of difference for those sleeping unsheltered outside.
