11 year-old donates money saved for iPad to St. Jude Children's Hospital

May 31, 2013

11 year-old Lindsey Johnson watched a promotional video for the St. Jude Children Research Hospital and donated all of the money she had been saving to purchase a new i-Pad.

Lindsey's fifth-grade class was participating in the St. Jude's Math-A-Thon. Students ask family and friends for pledges to solve math problems from a workbook and all funds go to St. Jude's. Lindsey's teacher showed the promotional video to motivate the class to raise money.

"She had seen the video and came home crying," said Lindsey's mother, Trisha Johnson.

When the deadline had ended for raising money, Lindsey's teacher, Judy Roebuck, asked some of her students how much they raised.

"We had made a goal for the group and it was $1,000," Roebuck said. "I was telling the class how close we were to the goal. Some of kids had $50 or $80 and her little hand went up and she said, 'I have about $265.' "And I said 'You must have talked to a lot of people, you must have really gone after it,' and she said, "Not really. I have been saving money to get an iPad, but I asked my mom if, instead, I could donate the money I had saved to St. Jude's."

Lindsey's teacher contacted the local news station in Atlanta to tell her story. 11Alive News and representatives from H.H. Gregg showed up at Lindsey's school to surprise her with a brand new iPad for her generosity.

"We just thought it was a fantastic opportunity," said Linda Lamb , regional manager at H.H. Gregg. "You hear of young people doing great things every day and we just thought it was a fantastic opportunity to support that."
