A Remotely Operated Underwater Vehicle Captured Footage Of This Bizarre Creature At 3330 Feet
August 19, 2015
A remotely operated underwater vehicle in the Gulf of Mexico captured this rare footage of a Stygiomedusa gigantea - a species of giant deep sea jellyfish. There have only been 115 sightings in the last 110 years.
The jellyfish has an umbrella-shaped bell that can be up to a 3 feet wide. It also has four "paddle-like" arms up to 18 feet long, which, as they lack stinging tentacles, may be used instead to trap prey.
