Meet The Elephant Who Became The Leader Of A Buffalo Herd

Prepare to meet Zhou, the African elephant who thinks she's a buffalo.

Her journey began in the 1970s when she was found orphaned in the lowveld of Zimbabwe at just two years old. Rescuers brought her to Imire, a conservation sanctuary, with hopes of reuniting her with other elephants.

But Nzou had other plans. She didn’t quite fit in with her own species, so her caregivers introduced her to the next largest herd animal: buffalo. To everyone’s surprise, she bonded deeply with them, adopting their ways and even learning to communicate with their unique calls. Her rumbles resonate with the herd, and they instinctively respond, creating a remarkable bond.
