You might be staring at this image wondering, what am I even looking at?
It almost looks blurry. Abstract. Like your eyes can’t quite focus.
But what you’re actually seeing is something extraordinary—millions of snow geese gathered in one place.
And it’s happening in a small, quiet town most people have never heard of: Havana, Illinois.
When the Sky Comes Alive
Once a year, this peaceful Midwestern town transforms into one of nature’s most breathtaking spectacles.
In central Illinois, the skies quite literally come alive as wave after wave of snow geese descend upon the Emiquon Nature Preserve.
For a town where many shops close during the winter months, something remarkable happens—the local population is suddenly outnumbered… by birds.
A Comeback Story Years in the Making
This incredible gathering didn’t happen by accident.
The preserve exists thanks to the work of The Nature Conservancy, which purchased thousands of acres of former farmland and restored the natural floodplain.
And nature responded.
Native plants returned. Fish populations rebounded. And then, after years of silence, a familiar sound filled the air once again—the unmistakable calls of snow geese.
A Pit Stop on an Epic Journey
These geese have traveled thousands of miles to get here.
Havana serves as a crucial rest stop on their long migration to the Arctic tundra, where they breed. Depending on weather and conditions, they may stay for just a few days—or linger for weeks.
During their stay, they feed in nearby farm fields and gather on the water, conserving energy for the final stretch of their journey.
A Sight You Don’t Just See—You Feel
When the flock takes off, it’s something few people ever forget.
The sky fills with a swirling, shifting mass of white. The sound is just as powerful—a roar of wings and calls that you don’t just hear… you feel.
For those lucky enough to witness it, this hidden corner of Illinois becomes the stage for one of the greatest shows on Earth.
