Golden Retriever Stops Playtime To Alert Owner About Medical Concern

August 21, 2023

A golden retriever service dog named Sparrow recently interrupted playtime to alert her mom to a critical medical concern.

"So we were happily playing with her penguin toy… when she suddenly stopped and started doing her avoidance behaviours," her owner Libbi said.

Libby initially thought Sparrow was feeling anxious about the game they were playing and tried to make it clear there was no pressure to continue playing the game.

It turns out that was not the case.

Sparrow was detecting that mom was about to faint.

"Enter pre-syncope moments later: 👋 It's me, hi, I'm the problem, it's me!" Libby wrote.

"We then spent 20 minutes with her lying on my chest riding out the symptoms of the starting part of pre-syncope until it passed, thanks to being supine (lying down) early on.

Thanks to Sparrow, I managed to avoid the worst symptoms of severe nausea, almost loss of vision & hearing, collapse from upright and resulting weakness! We then managed to get back to play shortly after, rather than it being game over for me for hours!"
