He Ran Into A Burning Building, Saved 7 Lives, Then Told His Mom He 'Just Fell'

April 6, 2026

On March 24, 2026, in Hanoi, Vietnam a 20-year-old college student became an unlikely hero and then tried to keep it to himself.

good news heroNguyen Le Tu

Nguyen Le Tu was heading home from the gym when he noticed flames consuming a six story building. Inside, seven people were trapped, with the stairwell completely blocked by fire.

Without hesitation, Tu rushed to help.

Using a ladder from outside, he guided two elderly residents to safety. But as he prepared to step away, he learned that women and children were still trapped deeper inside the building.

He did not hesitate. He climbed in.

The smoke inside was thick and suffocating, leaving him with almost no visibility.

"As soon as I smelled the first wave of smoke my eyes started stinging and I found it hard to breathe. It got so thick it was really hard to breathe," he told Thanh Niên.

One by one, he helped all seven people escape.

Several of those rescued, including Tu himself, were later taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Thankfully, everyone survived.

What he did next might be just as remarkable.

When he called his mother later that evening, he simply told her "he had fallen". He did not mention the fire or the lives he had just saved because he did not want her to worry.

Tu, a second year Engineering Physics student at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, is known for his excellent grades and strong character. His actions that day showed exactly who he is when it matters most.

He may have tried to keep it low key, but his community made sure his courage did not go unnoticed.

The Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union awarded him the Brave Youth badge, and Vietnam’s Acting Minister of Education presented him with a formal Certificate of Commendation.
