A Lightning Strike Took Everything — But A Stranger Gave It Back

August 13, 2025

When lightning struck the Heron on the Bluffs apartment complex in Savannah this July, the fire that followed left nearly 20 residents homeless. Among them was Georgia Southern University student Bella Rosales, who lost every belonging she had.

With no renters’ insurance, no family nearby, and only a modest college budget from her internship, Rosales was left starting over from scratch.

That’s when a man she had never met decided to step in.

Mike Horn first learned about Rosales after seeing WJCL’s coverage of the fire. Her story resonated with him — because he’d been there. Horn once lost everything himself during Hurricane Helene, and the community had rallied to help him rebuild. Not long after, he endured another devastating loss when his wife passed away from cancer.

“Our Statesboro community really stepped up to help me out after the hurricane,” Horn told WJCL. “Then a week later, I lost my wife to cancer. Just the overall support... I felt that it's time to give back.”

His late wife had owned a furniture store, and many pieces remained. Horn decided those items would go to Rosales.

On Monday, WJCL joined Horn to surprise her at her new home. Until that moment, she’d been living with only a mattress and bed frame.

"I'm in shock," Rosales said, smiling through the disbelief. "I'm so thankful and insanely grateful for the support of Savannah." She added that the gift came just in time for what might be her very first night truly spent in her new home.

For Horn, the act was about more than just furniture — it was about paying forward the compassion he once received.

“This is not just a one-time thing,” he said. “I encourage people to step out, step up, and help out when they see a story like this.”
