Off-Duty Lifeguard Saves Two Swimmers From Drowning In Rip Current

Today's good news story comes from Venice, Florida.
What began as a relaxing day off quickly turned into a life-saving mission for Sarasota County lifeguard Landon Lacy.

While enjoying some time at Venice Beach on May 30, Lacy noticed someone rushing toward the ocean with flotation devices. Moments later, a notification came through on his phone about a water rescue in progress. Without hesitation, Lacy sprang into action.
Even off the clock, his lifeguard instincts took over. He swam out more than 150 yards from shore, where two swimmers were trapped in a dangerous rip current. He first reached a woman in distress and helped guide her safely back to shore. But she was panicked—not for herself, but for her husband, who was still struggling in the water.
“She was frantic, saying, ‘My husband’s dying,’” Lacy recalled.
Lacy turned back and swam even farther—200 to 300 yards—until he spotted the man. Guiding him onto his back to stay afloat, Lacy brought him safely to land, where both swimmers were evaluated by Venice Fire Rescue.
The dramatic rescue, captured from above by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit, is a powerful reminder of the impact one person can have in a moment of crisis.
