Four-Year-Old Enjoys Special Halloween Treat Thanks To New Orleans Surgeon And His Family

November 1, 2023

Today's good news story comes from New Orleans, Louisiana.

Halloween is a time for kids to don costumes, embark on the quest for candies, and embrace the spooky spirit of the season. However, for young Naz Hassan, a sweet four-year-old from Syria, the prospect of missing out on trick-or-treating due to an upcoming heart surgery seemed like a bitter pill to swallow.

But thanks to the kindness of Dr. Bill Accousti, an orthopedic surgeon at Children's Hospital New Orleans, and his wife Tiffany, Naz's Halloween turned into a treat-filled night she won't soon forget.

Naz, who is currently undergoing medical treatment at Children's Hospital, was facing the disappointment of not being able to participate in Halloween festivities because of her scheduled heart surgery. Dr. Accousti and his wife, Tiffany, who have a long-standing tradition of creating memorable Halloween experiences for their own children, decided to extend that warmth and magic to Naz.

This week, the Accousti family organized a private night of trick-or-treating in their neighborhood, giving Naz the opportunity to dress up in her favorite costume and experience the joy of collecting candies and treats.

"We felt welcomed, and these unimaginably kind neighbors gave my daughter the chance to experience Halloween for the first time in her life," Naz's mother, Shiler Sido, said. "Our host family, plus the neighbors, made us feel happy and included."
