January 8, 2020
Elton John and Metallica are among the many musicians who announced donations to Australian firefighters.
On Tuesday during a show at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, Elton John pledged $1 million to help combat the fires.
"We should all be in the awe of the work the firefighters are doing," John said. "There are people out there who have lost their lives trying to save homes, there are people who have lost their lives and their homes."
Metallica also announced they are donating $750,000 to NSW Rural Fire Service and Country Fire Authority in Victoria through their charitable foundation All Within My Hands.
In a statement released by the band, they said they felt "overwhelmed" by the wild fires which are sweeping through the country.
"The resulting destruction and devastating effects on all residents, animals, the environment and the incredible land in Australia is truly heartbreaking," they said.
Actor Chris Hemsworth has also pledged $1 million towards helping firefighters and residents affected by the Australian bushfires.
Celebrities, philanthropists, generous individuals and businesses have together raised more than $140 million for bushfire victims and firefighters across the country, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
