What You Came Here To Do

I was a young man in my early twenties. I had just graduated college and had a wife and new baby son. I was looking for work but only had a degree in English. For some reason that didn’t translate well into job opportunities back then. This day I was interviewing for a salesman job with a jewelry company. The man was explaining how I would be traveling to grocery stores, setting up a table, and spending each day trying to sell gold necklaces and bracelets to women shoppers. He was going into how to push the most expensive items when I heard a voice deep within my own soul speaking to me as well: “Are you doing what you came here to do?”, it said. As my head cleared I knew in my heart the answer was, “No!” And I knew that I would not be taking that job.
The journey that decision set me off on was a long and winding one. I ended up working in a restaurant, a saw mill, and a group home for the mentally challenged. I went back to school, earned a degree in Education and worked as a teacher for several years. I learned that both of my sons had Autism and were mentally handicapped. I finally ended up working from home, caring for them, loving them, and learning so much from them as well. And I wrote about all I was going through along the way. Then one very special day I realized something: I truly was doing what I came here to do.
“Are you doing what you came here to do?” This is the question that your soul wants you to answer. This is the question that God wants you to answer. This is the question this world needs you to answer. Even if the answer is “no”, however, remember it is never too late to change. It is never too late to do what you were meant to do. It is never too late to live the way you were meant to live, love the way you were meant to love, and be the person God meant you to be.
