Just Wanted To Share A Little Story This Morning

By a friend • January 12, 2026

Last night, my brother and I were on our way home. It was late and pitch black outside. Both of us are night owls.

Well, I evidently drove over something that wasn't visible in the dark. Maybe a loose nail or something like that. The road I was driving on really needs a lot of work. It's full of potholes.

I heard this loud bang followed by my car jolting to the side. So I came to a stop on this county road, and sure enough my tire was punctured and quickly going flat.

First I called my insurance agent because I have roadside assistance. What I didn't know is that it's more of a 9:00 to 5:00 Monday through Friday place. So then I tried calling the carrier, Erie. And that's also a no-go. I was getting sent to various automed lines that don't get me to an actual person.

Well my little brother has autism, so he started having a full-blown meltdown because we were almost to his house. He wanted me to drive on the rim and I had to explain to him why I couldn't do that. So then I was extra stressed out. I was trying to calm my brother down and figure out what I was going to do.

Well as I was sitting on my phone trying to Google various 24-hour roadside assistance businesses, we see this flashlight heading towards us. We were kind on in a county road area and it was completely pitch black outside

This young man who lived not too far from where we were stalled had decided to come out of his house. He wanted to check to make sure we were all right.

I told him my situation, and he goes oh I can help you. He asked me if I had a spare tire in my trunk. And you know what? It turned out that I did. The very original spare tire that my car came with. All the way from 2015. I've never in my life needed to change a flat tire. I've been lucky. I've been driving since 2006.

I said to this young man, you know I didn't really have a dad to teach me these kinds of things growing up. Would you mind showing me how to do it? He said sure no problem.

Well as soon as he started helping us, my brother stopped freaking out. My brother immediately thanked him and calmed down. Which is really huge for my brother. It's not easy for him to calm down when he has an angry outburst like that.

My brother wasn't mad at me. He was just mad about the situation. It was quite unfortunate because we were literally only roughly a mile from his home.

Well we're talking to the young man who was helping us, and it turns out his name is Luis We chatted with him a little bit. He not only put the spare tire on for me but showed me a bit on how to do it. So now I'll have some idea on how to help myself should I ever be in that situation again.

And you know what? I can't express enough how thankful I am for Luis's help. He didn't have to do that at all. I didn't have any cash on me or anything like that to pay him. I'm more of a credit card person. I don't think he expects payment, I think he was just being nice. But I intend to thank him in the future with a gift.

Then not to mention it was the smack middle of the night so it was awfully brave of him to come out there and check on us. He had no idea who we were or the situation. He just wanted to be a good samaritan.

And my gosh I can't thank him enough! If I would have had to call around to see who could help us, I would have probably had to sit there for hours with a little brother in a full-blown meltdown. In my experience, tow truck drivers always have minimally a few hours wait.

That wouldn't have been fun for either of us. Not to mention Luis probably saved me an extra hundred some dollars or whatever the cost is to get roadside assistance anymore.

I got my little brother home in under 20 minutes of this situation occurring. And then I spent the night at his house and started calling tire places first thing this morning. Turned out Discount Tire had time to take me in. Now I have four brand new tires. And that's where my friend Anne comes in.

Anne was amazing and helped me pay for that massive bill. Which I totally didn't expect but I am incredibly thankful for that. January is one of the hardest months for me as a type 1 diabetic living on my own. I pay through the absolute nose just to survive until I meet my insurance deductible. Which will probably take me at least until late February. The unfortunate reality of living in the United States. It costs a lot of money to have autoimmune diseases. I have two have them.

You know what you guys? I am so thankful. I don't even think I could express how thankful I am right now. I was completely down in the dumps the last 3 weeks. Really struggling with my depression and thinking about how people can be so incredibly cold towards one another. Yeah, part of that is probably because I spend way too much time on social media. It's not healthy for me.

But that's not my point. My point is that two people really helped me out when I was in a complete jam. And they didn't have to do that at all. It really warmed my heart and helped me kind of see the bright side of humanity again. It's easy to see the downside of everything these days. Also it's easy to forget that there are good people in this world who care.

To say I'm touched and honored To have met these two wonderful people is truly an understatement.

The reality is, a lot of people are struggling these days just because of the high cost of living anymore. And when somebody helps you out like that, well it just means everything to you. It means I don't have to worry about making ends meet this month or building up or more debt.

Thank you, just thank you from the bottom of my heart. My kitty cats are so glad that I got home in one piece this morning. I can tell they missed me last night.
