October 7, 2022

Suddenly a French basketball player's jersey is in high demand in the US.

That's because of his unique name: Steeve Ho You Fat.

Yes, Steeve Ho You Fat is a real person and his name is not a joke. He's played basketball all over France during a pro career that started in 2008.

But it wasn't until this week during an exhibition game between the NBA's developmental basketball team G League Ignite and France's Metropolitans 92 that he became a hit in the U.S.

Even the announcers were a little stunned to see that last name:

Kevin Hart could not get enough of the name. Here he is in an interview on SportsCenter.

Ho You Fat told his story to Yahoo! Sports after the game. His grandfather originally left China for France, and his mother is an African dance teacher.

"Chinese people don't like to mix [marriages]. I'm Black, it's a Chinese name, so it's not easy to talk about that," Ho You Fat said. "But that's it. I'm proud of my name, I'm proud of who I am. I'm proud of my dad and my mom."
