The Wealthy Homeless Man

I passed this man a thousand times

And a thousand times I felt such guilt

Entering a house with all the trimmings

While he enters the box house he built

A humble man he is, named Steve

Who appears to be mid-thirty

Who thinks light of his dry blistery skin

and his attire that’s filthy and dirty

He’s more concerned about others

Employed by servicing smiles

Walking his beat on his blistery feet

Through city streets for miles

I’ve offered him a dollar or two

Yet he always insist to decline

I’ve handed him fresh clothes to wear

But he always says "I like mine”

Claiming he never takes from others

That he only owns "Giving Hands”

That one shouldn’t judge by appearance

Under his filth, he’s a wealthy young man

"I have no desire for a big ole house

Or those pricey clothes you exhibit

Materials are not as valuable as..

The true essence of how I am living”

"I draw on breathes of appreciation;

A pleasure to just be alive

To wake daily and enjoy this world I’m in

I never feel starved or deprived”

"I give out all my belongings

To anyone in more need than I….

Only keeping what I can’t live without

My respect, my dignity and pride”

"I still rest in warmth without any heat

Supplied by my righteous young heart

I’m nourished through the good Lord above me

Who loves me for doing my part”

"So I smile more and I hurt much less

Knowing I am setting an example

To those who fret over material things

And fall short of just being thankful”

"I will propose to you a free token

Words that will bring you delight

Look past one’s external frontage..

Priceless assets are not found in ones sight”

"You’ll find houses and condo’s mean nothing

Jewelry, cars and clothes are just a waste

When chosen possession with a heart in mind

You will prefer a more natural taste”

You will want what I have, for it is free-

No cost to own inner peace

Just own hands that give and take much less
