Just as purring indicates a positive emotional state from domestic cats, chuffing is a vocalization used by tigers to show their happiness. It's often used between two tigers who are greeting each other, during courting, or simply by a mother comforting her cubs. It's also common to see captive tigers exchange chuffs with their human keepers in a way to express a greeting or excitement.
