'Please Be Alive': Man Checks On His 98-Year-Old Neighbor During An Ice Storm
January 30, 2026
A simple act of kindness is striking a chord online after a man shared a quiet moment he spent with his elderly neighbor during a brutal winter storm.
Carlos Whittaker posted about the experience after noticing something that didn’t feel right early one freezing morning. Outside, his 98-year-old neighbor was sitting alone in his car. The headlights were on. The car wasn’t moving. Temperatures in Nashville had dropped to 8 degrees amid one of the worst ice storms the area has seen in decades, and the power was out.
Concerned, Whittaker’s wife handed him two cups of oatmeal and urged him to go check.
“I walked over, honestly praying, please be alive,” Whittaker wrote.
Thankfully, his neighbor was okay. He was simply sitting in his car to charge his phone.
What happened next is what’s resonating with so many people.
Instead of heading back home, Whittaker stayed. He sat with his neighbor for about thirty minutes, sharing oatmeal and conversation in the cold. The two talked about life, past ice storms, and stories from decades ago, including the neighbor’s time working for the phone company.
Whittaker went over to make sure his neighbor was safe. What he discovered was something else entirely.
“He just needed company.”
