In this captivating video, a courageous bear defies the powerful forces of nature as it attempts to cross the South Yuba River in Washington, California.

The video was shared by Washington County Fire Chief Mike Stewart.

The bear is a much better swimmer than a human would be, and it's unlikely that a human would have survived, Stewart said.
