The Timeless Tradition Of Prom Night Eve Singing In Uppsala Sweden

May 24, 2023

In the enchanting twilight of a Swedish spring evening, a cherished tradition unfolds as male students dressed in their finest attire gather in anticipation.

For hundreds of years, on the evening before prom male students in Uppsala, Sweden, go around the city and sing to their prom dates.

The tradition is called "Serenade Night".

According to the tradition, the listener lights a candle so the boys know they can hear the song. After the song is finished, the listener lowers something for them to drink and they move on to the next home.

The group does this for everyone's potential (or already decided) prom date, all on the same night.
