Baby Sloth Is Reunited With Mom

May 18, 2022

On May 10, a Jaguar Rescue Center staff member found a baby sloth crying on the floor near the beach. He spotted the mom on a nearby tree, but she was climbing back to the canopy. So, he brought the baby for a check-up with the vet. The sloth was healthy and didn't have any injuries.

"We recorded the cry of the baby and played it near the tree to get the mom's attention, we waited patiently until the mom came down for the baby," the rescue center said.

"It melts our hearts every time we can witness the reunion of a mom and her baby."

A few fun facts about sloths: Female sloths give birth to one baby a year after a gestation period of six months. The baby sticks with the mother for about six months, grasping its mom's belly as she moves through the trees. This is an important bonding period that helps the offspring learn and develop. When the sloth leaves its mom after about six months, it adopts part of its mother's range, continuing to communicate with the parent through calls.
