Great Pyrenees Puppy And Wild Elk Exchange Kisses
March 21, 2021
We spent all weekend dealing with our "snowpocalypse," caring for both our farm animals and a friend's down the road.
After the storm subsided, the resident elk were wandering the area looking for food, moving constantly in search of grazing. It's fairly normal to see the elk a few times a month during winter but this time about 50-60 of them crossed the highway directly into our pasture.
We walked out to observe how our 5-month-old Great Pyrenees puppies would respond. We watched as both the elk and the puppies looked tentatively at one another. We were so lucky to capture this moment when Winston walked the fence line, sat, and waited until a young bull with one antler approached to say hello. They exchanged some kisses, both acting curious and relatively comfortable given that these interactions do not happen often or at all between these species.
This was definitely the first time for Winston and seemingly the first for this young elk. It was really magical to experience the innocence and curiosity within this interaction.
