When floodwaters began filling Brittany Grant’s home in Palm Bay, Florida, she had nowhere to go. With water rising around them, she and her son climbed onto the kitchen counter with their three dogs. They remained trapped there for more than three hours, waiting and hoping someone could reach them.

After calling 911 mulitple times and learning that emergency crews couldn't reach them because of the flooding, Grant turned to Facebook in desperation.

Thankfully, her message reached the right people.

A mother saw the post and sent her two teenage sons to help. Fifteen-year-old Jonah Marshall borrowed a neighbor's kayak, while his 17-year-old brother, Lucas, grabbed his paddleboard.

For Jonah, there wasn't much to think about.

"Because they needed help and they were in trouble and danger, so just didn't think about it and just went to help them," he explained.

When they reached the home, Lucas helped Grant's son get to safety first. Knowing the boy was likely frightened, he tried to keep his mind off the scary situation by making conversation.

He asked about his name, how school was going, and even joked, "This is a weird day, isn't it?"

It was a small gesture, but one that helped turn a frightening rescue into something a little less scary for a young boy.

The brothers eventually helped bring Brittany, her son, and all three dogs safely back to dry land.

Looking back, Grant says it was the kindness of strangers that made all the difference.

"The community came together and saved us," she said. "If it wasn't for them, I don't know how we would have gotten out."

Grant and her son are now staying with a friend as they recover from the frightening experience.

And while she may not have known the neighbors who came to her rescue before that day, she says their actions restored her faith in humanity.
