New Jersey Students Fill Football Field With More Than 250,000 Pounds of Food for Families in Need

A football field became a sea of yellow donation bags as hundreds of New Jersey students came together to collect more than 250,000 pounds of food for families in need, setting a new record for a nonprofit dedicated to fighting hunger.

The incredible effort took place at Howell High School during the second annual 100-Yard Food Drive Challenge, organized by Dermer Dreams. By the end of the event, the students had accomplished something extraordinary: the largest food drive in the organization's history.
Thousands of bags filled with donated food stretched from one end zone to the other, with so many donations that additional bags had to be placed along the sidelines.
But the real impact of their hard work would reach far beyond the football field.
A Community Effort That Made a Huge Difference
The project began with students collecting food throughout their neighborhoods. As word spread, families, local businesses, schools and volunteers joined in, transforming a student-led initiative into a massive community effort.
The goal was to help families experiencing food insecurity, and the students delivered in a big way.
"These students did more than collect food. They united communities and demonstrated the power of working together," said Dan Dermer, co-founder of Dermer Dreams.
The food was distributed to approximately 30 food bank partners across New Jersey, where it will help provide meals for individuals and families who need support.
For the students, the accomplishment was about much more than filling bags or earning volunteer hours. It was an opportunity to see how much of a difference they could make when they took the initiative to help others.
Students Turn Community Service Into Something Extraordinary
The challenge is part of Dermer Dreams' Neighborhood Captain Program, which gives students the opportunity to organize food drives, rally their neighbors and take the lead in helping their communities.
The program also provides a way for students to earn community service hours while developing leadership and organizational skills.
Rather than simply showing up to volunteer, students take responsibility for their own food drives and work to encourage others to participate.
This year's record-breaking collection shows just how much young people can accomplish when they're given the opportunity to lead.
Once the donations had covered the field, members of the Howell High School football team joined volunteers to load the bags onto trucks for transportation to food bank partners.
It was a fitting end to an effort that brought so many people together for one common purpose.

The Impact Will Continue Long After the Field Is Empty
By the end of the day, the football field had been cleared, but the kindness behind those thousands of yellow bags was only beginning to make its way into people's lives.
For families facing difficult circumstances, the donations will help put food on the table and ease some of the pressure of making ends meet.
Dermer Dreams co-founder Dan Dermer hopes the accomplishment will inspire even more young people to get involved in their communities.
"Not only will we feed people who are food insecure, but we will inspire young students to take action and make a difference in this world," he said.
And that may be one of the most encouraging parts of this story.
More than a quarter million pounds of food is an incredible achievement on its own. But the students also showed their neighbors what can happen when people stop waiting for someone else to make a difference and decide to do something themselves.
One neighborhood at a time, one donation bag at a time, they turned a football field into a powerful reminder of what a community can accomplish together.
