She Was Laughed at for Wanting to Be an Actress. Now She's Starring in a Movie
November 3, 2026
Olivia Hargroder, a dancer with Down syndrome, survived major heart surgery at just nine weeks old after doctors gave her only a 20% chance of survival.
Now 27, she's landed the lead role in a feature film, despite a careers counselor laughing at her dream of becoming an actress and suggesting she work in a bakery instead.
But Olivia wasn't about to let someone else's expectations decide what she could accomplish.

When Olivia was born, doctors were deeply concerned about her heart condition. Her family faced the frightening possibility that she might not survive infancy.
At just nine weeks old, she underwent major heart surgery. Despite being given only a 20% chance of surviving the operation, Olivia pulled through.
As she grew up, she developed a love for performing, particularly dancing. Her family encouraged her interests and helped her build the confidence to pursue the things that made her happy.
Eventually, Olivia set her sights on becoming an actress.
When she told a school careers counselor that she wanted to study at Australia's prestigious National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), his response was shocking. Rather than encouraging her, he laughed at the idea and suggested she work in a bakery instead.
It would have been easy to let that kind of reaction discourage her. Olivia chose a different path.
She continued studying acting and eventually joined Bus Stop Films, an organization that creates opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities to develop their filmmaking skills and work in the screen industry.
That experience helped open the door to an opportunity Olivia had been working toward for years.
She auditioned for Boss Cat, a feature film directed by Genevieve Clay-Smith, and landed the lead role.

Olivia plays Sonja, a young woman dealing with grief and fighting for her independence. The character also uses dance to express emotions that are difficult to put into words, giving Olivia the chance to combine her two biggest passions.
The film premiered at the Sydney Film Festival in June 2026 and is scheduled for release in Australia on December 3.
And Olivia isn't finished dreaming. She hopes to perform in Broadway musicals someday, and one of her biggest ambitions is to dance on tour with her idol, Taylor Swift.
Her journey has already taken her much further than some people ever expected. But perhaps the most important lesson comes from the way she responded when someone told her that her dream wasn't realistic.
Olivia didn't need someone else to decide what she was capable of. She just needed the opportunity to show them.
