Strangers Step Up to Help 81-Year-Old Man Working 14-Hour Days Delivering Heavy Luggage to Help Pay for His Wife’s Cancer Treatment

An 81-year-old man was working long hours delivering lost luggage to help pay for his wife’s cancer treatment when a stranger noticed him struggling with a heavy suitcase.

What she did next turned one simple act of kindness into an incredible outpouring of support from people around the country.

Don Johnson was delivering luggage in the Dallas-Fort Worth area when a Ring camera captured him carrying heavy suitcases up a flight of stairs.

At 81, Don had been taking on extra hours as an independent contractor, sometimes working 14-hour days and driving hundreds of miles during a single shift. He said he was doing whatever he could to help his family keep up with rising expenses and the cost of his wife Josephine’s cancer treatment.

As Don was making his delivery, a woman he had never met came outside.

She offered to help with the luggage and began talking with him. During their conversation, Don told her about Josephine, his wife of 57 years, who was battling aggressive cancer.

The couple had moved in with their daughter, but the growing cost of groceries, household expenses and cancer treatment had put them under tremendous financial pressure.

Don had tried finding other work, but nothing had worked out. So he continued delivering luggage, sometimes driving as far away as Oklahoma to make ends meet.

“I appreciate what we do get from insurance, but it doesn’t cover it all,” Don said. “And cancer treatment is very expensive.”

The woman who met Don on that staircase could have simply wished him well and gone back inside.

Instead, she decided to do something about it.

She created a GoFundMe fundraiser and a TikTok page called “Help Don Retire,” sharing his story with others.

The response was far beyond anything Don or Josephine expected.

The fundraiser has now brought in about $700,000, giving the couple an opportunity to breathe after Don had spent so much time working to keep up with their expenses.

“I’m still stunned that people responded,” Josephine said. “I wasn’t expecting any response.”

Don felt the same way.

“I left and thought I’d never see her again,” he said. “And it was an amazing thing she did for me, for us.”

 

The timing was especially meaningful because Don had recently begun having trouble with his car and had already cut back on his delivery hours.

After 57 years of marriage, Josephine said her husband’s devotion has shown her exactly what the words “for better or worse” can look like.

“I’m so happy that he turned out to be the man he is,” she said.

And despite everything he has been through, Don’s focus remains on the woman he loves.

“I love her dearly, and I want her to be well,” he said.

Don has also been thinking about the stranger who stopped to help him and the countless people who followed her example.

“It restores my faith in people,” he said. “For her to do that was a miracle.”

He never asked for the help, but now that he has experienced it, he hopes to pass that kindness along.

“I look forward to the day that I can help people just like I’m being helped now.”
