12-year-old Rescues 114 Stuffed Animals, Repairs Them, and Gives Them to Children Affected by Home Fires

When a child loses their home in a fire, a stuffed animal can't replace what's gone. But it can provide something incredibly important in the aftermath: comfort.

That's why 12-year-old Sadie Hutson of Dobson, North Carolina, decided to do something about it.

Sadie and her mother rescue worn and damaged stuffed animals from thrift stores, then carefully wash, repair, restuff and restore them by hand. Instead of ending up in the trash, the bears, rabbits and other beloved toys get a second chance.

And now, they're being given to children who have experienced home fires and other disasters.

Earlier this year, the American Red Cross in North Carolina was running low on stuffed animals for its disaster response efforts. After hearing the call for help, Sadie donated 114 restored stuffed animals.

But she didn't stop there.

She has continued rescuing and restoring more toys, knowing they will eventually be placed in the arms of children going through some of the hardest moments of their lives.

"Hearing the stories was a little heartbreaking," Sadie said. "That's why I did it."

For Red Cross Disaster Program Specialist Jon McCollum, Sadie's generosity means much more than the number of stuffed animals she donated.

"A lot of times children get overlooked in the initial stages of a disaster," he said. "We want to make sure they are taken care of immediately as well."

Recently, McCollum and fellow Red Cross volunteers recognized Sadie's efforts with an award at the Central Surry Volunteer Fire Department.

But recognition wasn't what motivated her. Sadie was initially hesitant to share her story publicly, eventually agreeing because she hoped it might inspire other young people to help people in their own communities.

"As long as you do it through the kindness of your heart, you can do it," she said.

What started as a simple mother-daughter project has now become an ongoing mission.

Sadie is giving forgotten stuffed animals a second life, while giving children who have lost so much something to hold onto.

And sometimes, a little comfort can make a very big difference.
