Family Reunites With Bartender Who Saved Their 6-Year-Old Son's Life

A quick thinking bartender, a brave older brother, and a little bit of lifesaving training came together to save a 6 year old boy's life after he began choking on a peppermint inside a Michigan shopping mall.

What could have become every parent's worst nightmare instead became a powerful reminder that ordinary people can become heroes in just a matter of seconds.

The frightening incident happened on July 18 inside the Mall of Monroe in Michigan. Six year old Oliver Webb had just eaten a peppermint he received from a nearby store when it became lodged in his throat, leaving him unable to breathe.

The first person to realize something was wrong was Oliver's 10 year old brother, Hudson.

"I looked back and I see his face turning red, and I'm like, 'Oh, my God. He's choking.'"

Without hesitation, Hudson tried to help using a technique he had learned from watching a video.

"I started patting him on the back, but I wasn't hard enough with the patting... and then Devon came out and saved Oliver, and I'm super thankful."

Devon Forrest, a 27 year old bartender and manager at Dirty Birdie, noticed the emergency unfolding. Remaining calm, he rushed over and held Oliver over a garbage can until the peppermint was finally dislodged, allowing the little boy to breathe again.

Devon later revealed that just one month earlier, the owner of Dirty Birdie had paid for him to become CPR certified. That training proved invaluable when it mattered most.

Oliver's mother, Mandy Michael, had dropped her sons and several friends off at the mall and was only a short distance away when Hudson called with the terrifying news.

"He told me, 'Oliver choked and this guy from the Dirty Birdie saved him'," Mandy told WXYZ.

At first, the reality of what had happened did not fully sink in.

"And then, until I saw the video. I mean, to see it. I don't know. I don't know how it would've turned out had he not been here."

Nearly two weeks later, the family returned to Dirty Birdie, not because they had to, but because they wanted to thank the man who stepped in without a second thought.

Fighting back tears, Mandy embraced Devon and shared just how much his actions meant to her.

"You deserve everything. Like, this is my baby. Like, I'm a middle aged mom and this is my baby. And if something would've happened to him, I always tell them, I'd never make it if something would happen to one of them. So, I can't thank you enough. Thank you doesn't cut it."

For Devon, the reunion was every bit as meaningful.

"It feels good knowing that he's safe. Obviously, that was the number one concern at the time. Seeing him now, it's awesome."

Thanks to a business owner who invested in CPR training for an employee, a little boy is alive today, a grateful family has their son, and a quiet act of courage has become a moment they will never forget.
